What a REScheck report is

REScheck is the U.S. Department of Energy's compliance tool for the residential IECC envelope. It documents the UA alternative (IECC R402.1.5): your home's total envelope heat loss is compared against a code-minimum reference home, so a wall assembly that misses the prescriptive R-value can be offset by better windows or more attic insulation. The output is a compliance certificate and an inspection checklist your building department recognizes by name.

Most residential REScheck reports fail plan review for one of two reasons: the wrong code edition or climate zone was selected, or the envelope inputs do not match what is drawn. We take both off the table - the code edition is matched to your jurisdiction, and every assembly and window value is annotated with the sheet it came from.

What's in the report

Does REScheck apply in your state?

REScheck is the document wherever an IECC edition is enforced - most of the country. It is not the document in California (Title 24 / CF1R) or Washington (WSEC - use wsec.ai), and Florida, Oregon, New York, Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Vermont run their own paths in many jurisdictions. Look up your state before ordering, or send us the jurisdiction and we tell you straight.

One case where a REScheck will not clear your permit: some jurisdictions require an energy rating, such as a HERS or ERI score, instead of a document-based compliance report. That is a field-tested rating performed on the finished house by a certified rater, and it is a different deliverable from anything prepared off your plan set. Tell us your jurisdiction when you request a quote - if that is what your department wants, we say so before you are invoiced, not after.
