About The Plans Examiner
Travis Smith is an ICC-Certified Residential Energy Inspector / Plans Examiner with a general contracting background in Washington. He holds the same ICC certification held by the plan reviewer at your local building department — the difference is who he works for.
Every Manual J and REScheck report prepared by The Plans Examiner is reviewed personally by Travis before delivery. Reports are calculated in Cool Calc, ACCA-approved software, using inputs extracted from your actual plan set rather than estimated from square footage.
The Plans Examiner is residential only — new construction, additions, ADUs, and HVAC change-outs. Commercial projects require COMcheck and typically a licensed engineer's calculation; we don't prepare those.
Travis also offers full residential plan review — a service beyond a single Manual J or REScheck report — in Washington state via wsec.ai. That service will open nationally under The Plans Examiner after certification is complete. See the plan review page.

The Plans Examiner is a private practice. Reports are prepared for use by the applicant or contractor of record. Final authority always rests with your building official.
