Permit Corrections & Plan Check Comments

You got a correction letter. Here's how to get through it.

Plan check comments are written for whoever drew the plans, not for the homeowner. We go through each one: what it's asking for, whether it applies to your project, and who fixes it.

Travis Smith, ICC-Certified Residential Plans Examiner. The same certification your building department's plan reviewer holds - working for you.

What I check on every comment

An example

A homeowner in Virginia was adding a heated office over an existing slab. The correction letter had three energy comments: ceiling insulation, slab edge insulation, and a vapor retarder requirement that cited a section number that doesn't exist in the state code.

The answer was in the state's existing building code: for this work, only the new assemblies have to meet the insulation table. The response back to the reviewer cited the sections for each comment.
