Manual J, S, and D: the load calculation, equipment selection, and duct design a ducted HVAC permit needs, prepared from your plans and reviewed by an ICC-certified examiner. Sometimes written Manual JSD, always sold together since each step depends on the one before it.
Travis Smith, ICC-Certified Residential Plans Examiner. The same certification your building department's plan reviewer holds - working for you.
Manual S is computed directly from your Manual J's loads, so there is no equipment to select without a finished load calculation. Manual D then sizes ducts to both the loads and the equipment Manual S selected. Each step needs the one before it, so the price climbs step by step and neither S nor D is sold on its own.
| Package | What you get | Price | Status | |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| Manual J + S | Adds Manual S: equipment selection computed directly from your Manual J loads, matching a real furnace, AC, or heat pump model and capacity to those numbers. | $299 up to 3,000 sq ft · $399 to 4,500 · $499 to 6,000 | Available | Pay now → |
| Manual J + S + D | This package: adds Manual D duct sizing and layout so the equipment Manual S selected actually delivers the loads Manual J calculated to each register. | $449 up to 3,000 sq ft · $549 to 4,500 · $649 to 6,000 | Available | Order above ↑ |
Manual S and Manual D are not sold standalone - each is scoped from your plan set. Send your plans and we will confirm your package and price before you pay anything.
One HVAC permit package covering load calculation, equipment selection, and duct design, built from your actual plan set - not a rule-of-thumb estimate.
Any ducted system - new construction, additions with new ductwork, and ADUs with their own ducted equipment - needs the load calculation, equipment selection, and duct design done as one job, since each depends on the one before it. Going ductless? A mini-split skips Manual D since there's no duct system to design; see does a ductless mini-split need a Manual J? for that version. Only need the load calculation on its own? See the Manual J page for pricing without S or D.
