Room-by-room vs. block load: not the same product

Both are called a "heat load calculation" and both are sometimes marketed as a Manual J, but they answer different questions and a permit reviewer treats them differently.

• A block load treats the whole house as one box. It returns a single whole-house tonnage, fast, from overall square footage and a handful of averaged inputs. It's fine for a rough equipment-size ballpark.
• A room-by-room Manual J sizes every room and every duct run. It calculates the load for each individual space based on its own windows, walls, orientation, and ceiling, which is what Manual S equipment selection and Manual D duct design are built from - and what most jurisdictions expect a permit-submittal Manual J to include.
• A cheaper block load is a different product, not a lower price for the same one. If a quote looks unusually low, ask whether it's room-by-room or block - the two aren't interchangeable, and a block load submitted where a full Manual J is expected can bounce at plan review.
